Skill swapping, the revolutionary new trend of trading your valuable knowledge, talents, services for someone else’s.
We all know, can do, can provide SOMETHING that others need and vice verse. In the past we have monetized this transaction, making it remote, contactless (not always bad ('',) and somewhat cold and impersonal.
But in what seems to be a more and more common acceptable and appealing trend small businesses are using skill swaps to accomplish this, while simultaneously networking, gaining more exposure and possibly even finding new friends along the way.
Need a photoshoot for your store or products? Need an awesome blowdry for your profile pics? Can you provide some advertising and a wee bit more exposure for a new start up? Know how to help setting up a facebook store? Connecting social media to a website?
Have a think about what you can offer in return. Some times all we need is a small leg up in one direction or another, as they say "it's easy if you know". So have a think about what you know / can provide.
Meeting in a coffee shop to discuss the subjects that we need help with is a super enjoyable and rewarding experience that often leads to sharing our experiences of the ups and downs of starting / running a business. Laughing over mistakes and realising we are all having the same experience is a great equalizer.
Get to know your "swapper", to know as much as possible about their skills and see if they are a good fit for what you are looking for. If possible look for recommendations from others that they have worked with. Make sure you are feeling a connection with the person - you know when it feels right - right?
If you have tried this or are wanting to - we'd love to hear more about it. This comfortably small Island is a perfect fit for this exciting new trend. Swap your skills, leave the financials for the sales end of things which will undoubtably increase with the advantages you'll discover along the way.
